Border Crossing

welcome to idaho

I’ve lived most of my life in Providence, RI, where we used to joke that you couldn’t go to the movies without leaving the state. Rhode Island, after all, is the littlest state in the union, and so it is necessarily cozy with its neighbors. When I made the decision to move out west for grad school, to the land of BIG states, I figured my days of crossing and recrossing state borders were over.

Then I looked up Moscow, ID — home to University of Idaho and my MFA program — on a map, and discover it is located about two feet from the Washington border.  And what else?  Turns out that the cheapest apartment I can find is seven miles over the border, in Pullman, WA.

So here I am, straddling worlds once again — classes in Idaho, apartment in Washington, groceries in Idaho, laundromat in Washington…  ah well, at least the drive comes with a spectacular view (see my header).

thanks, but I’m not totally happy with my layout yet… I can’t tell if I’m tweaking things to any purpose, or if I just miss my old layout.

    Yay, a post!

And until I read this for some reason I didn’t register that you were going to UNI. That’s where my best friend just graduated from!

And that is a gorgerous view. How long of a drive do you have?

  4. Comment by george:

Hi Alt! Um… do you mean UNI as in University of Northern Iowa? Because that would be an exceptionally long commute for me! I’m going to the University of Idaho.

  5. Comment by george:

oh, and the drive is about 10-15 minutes.

No, it was definitely Idaho, she was in Moscow. I think she referred to it as UNI…maybe she just meant it was a northern campus of Idaho, or maybe I’m remembering incorrectly, haha. Either is possible :)

  7. Comment by george:

ah, I see… maybe she said U of I and you misheard? That’s cool, anyway.

Where my parents live in Vermont, it is literally true that you have to leave the state to see a movie. The movie theatre burned down last year and now the closest cinema is in New Hampshire.

But yeah, I’ve gone over to Seekonk for movies, which does count as leaving the state.
