Having coffee with a friend a couple of weeks ago, and she asked me why I decided to move out here.  Well, for my program, of course, plus the scenery, the weather…  “And bears,” I told her.  “I love bears.”

“Oh, really!  So you know all about the grizzly preserve just up the hill from here, right?”

Um, what?  No — somehow I did not, but two days later I made sure to head over to the WSU campus (less than a mile from my front door) and visit the research bears.  I figured they’d be off in the woods somewhere — maybe I’d catch a glimpse of one if looked really hard.

Haha. They were about a foot away from me. Big guys!

Sadly, the chain link fence confused my autofocus, so my pics aren’t the greatest. But I did get a short movie!

Wait, is the first one in a cage though? That’s kinda depressing. :(

    But yay Bears!!!!!

they have… not cages, but “cells” I guess. Not positive, but I think the idea is that they go out to play in waves, some of them in the yard, some of them in the cells, so they won’t make baby bears. Or possibly just to separate aggressive ones from the others.

ETA: the top bear actually isn’t in a cage, he’s hanging out near the cell door to chat with another bear who is inside. it was a little sad but also very cute… they were so clearly hanging out and interacting.

oh also, they’re all rescue bears… injured or abandoned as cubs, and unable to survive in the wild. so they’re brought to the school for research. just to clarify, they aren’t capturing bears just for my amusement.
